Staging Minimalism - Less Is More

THE TREND TOWARDS MINIMALISM- WHY AND HOW SOMETIMES LESS CAN BE MORE.

One of the staging trends to watch is the move towards minimalism. Stagers are increasingly leaning towards a less is more approach. Clients seem to be embracing this look in large numbers. Gone are the days of layers, texture, filling every corner, pattern mixing and vignette story telling. Though these techniques still have their place, more and more stagers are leaning towards simple, monochromatic furnishings, simple art and minimal decor. Just like minimalism in other aspects of life, today’s modern stagings are focused on creating spaces for a collective exhale, embracing nature and elegant ease. Minimalism isn’t just for modern homes. It’s a trend that works for numerous other styles including farmhouse, industrial, coastal and transitional. In many of these stagings the only decor you might find is greenery- realistic looking greenery. Minimalism as a design style is defined by clean lines, reductive living, uncluttered, monochromatic and simplicity. Serenity and simplicity that does not overshadow the design of the home. Sometimes the style direction is only subtly referenced in the art or type of texture that is introduced.

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is an approach to life. An approach that says never take more than you need, and what you need is actually not very much. It is about simplifying life and reducing life as whole to its least common denominator. As everyone’s daily life becomes more stressful, the trend toward minimalism makes sense as an antidote. By creating more space by using fewer things, you have created an atmosphere of calm.

What Minimalism is NOT

Minimalism is not cold and sterile. The goal is to create a welcoming, calm space that feels physically comfortable. This means that each of the (few) things you select to stage the house have increased importance and impact. When working with a minimal color palette of mostly organic neutrals with white and black it is imperative that you consider texture as an important feature. It could be a nubby sofa pillow or a throw blanket with pom poms. The way you add different wood elements through framed artwork and wood furniture adds an organic feeling. Using a mix of metallics in a space will add interest and depth without feeling busy or cluttered.

How does it impact design?

It encourages reduction. It encourages simple and clean lines. It encourages less movement and energy in terms of pattern and color. It increases the importance of the things you choose since you are choosing fewer things.

Why has minimalism become popular in home staging?

The urban market is especially becoming more and more luxury and design centric. Minimalism in decorating allows the focus to be on the attributes of the home and not the furniture or decor. This means that staging minimally will highlight the choices of finish materials and the quality of the work. Additionally, minimalism makes small spaces seem large and larger spaces seem grand. Minimalism has been a design trend throughout various decades with limited broad appeal. However, the fact that it’s roots go back to the post world war 2 era and industrialization means that it has a timeless quality that can be adapted to many different architectural styles. For now, it appears that minimalism is here to stay.
